Learning

At our school, we teach the NSW curriculum and offer many different subjects to support each student’s learning. We know that development of skills in literacy and numeracy are the building blocks for learning and for everyday life. Our teachers use effective teaching strategies to help students achieve their goals.

Why choose us for your child’s learning?

Lochinvar Public School is proud to be part of a strong and supportive network within the Maitland region, leading the way in explicit teaching alongside our partner schools through the Maitland Explicit Community of Schools (METCoS). Collaboration is central to our approach, with leadership teams and Principals regularly visiting each school to share expertise and strengthen teaching practices.
Our teachers are confident specialists in explicit teaching strategies, actively sharing their knowledge and engaging in honest, open, and reflective discussions to continually enhance their skills. Dedicated advocates for explicit teaching, our staff participate in ongoing professional learning to ensure every student receives the support they need to thrive.
At Lochinvar Public School, students are empowered learners with clear goals. They receive regular, meaningful feedback from their teachers, helping them stay motivated and aware of ‘what’s next’ in their learning journey to achieve outstanding success.

Religion and ethics

At Lochinvar Public School, SRE is delivered weekly on Wednesdays.

On enrolment parents/carers will be given the SRE participation letter to complete and return. After the initial enrolment, notification of changes to a child's enrolment in SRE should be given to school office, in writing (email: lochinvar-p.school@det.nsw.edu.au).

The following SRE classes are offered at Lochinvar Public School:

Combined Christian SRE is provided by SRE teachers from different Christian denominations and churches. The approved providers in this combined arrangement are:

  • Catholic Diocese Maitland and Newcastle
  • Anglican Diocese of Newcastle.

All Christian SRE teachers are authorised and trained by an approved provider.

The Christian SRE curriculum is authorised by GodSpace. The curriculum is based on Good News about Jesus Christ and learning the key elements of Christian life and culture and can be found at https://godspace.org.au/curriculum/

Christian SRE engages students in conversations as they question life, explore values and discover faith.

Students not attending SRE are given supervised alternative meaningful activities.

High potential and gifted education

At our school, we give the right support to help gifted learners to grow and do their best.

We notice these students early. They may learn quickly or show strong skills in creativity, leadership, problem solving or sport. We help them stay challenged with lessons and activities that match their strengths.

Our learning approach

Our school uses explicit teaching. This means we clearly tell students what they are learning, why it is important and how to do it step by step. Explicit teaching helps students understand new ideas by breaking them into smaller parts.

Learning at our school is student-centred, inclusive and practical. We are committed to equity and access. We support all learning styles and needs. Our teachers use proven teaching strategies. They take part in ongoing professional development to stay up to date with best teaching practice.
