Our extra-curricular highlights
Cultural Groups
Lochinvar Public School is proud to host Cultural Groups facilitated by Our Kinnections, an Aboriginal-owned and operated small business founded by Joey and Vicki Griffiths. Our Kinnections is dedicated to supporting, empowering, and creating positive change within Aboriginal communities, families, and young people through mentoring and culturally enriching programs.
These Cultural Groups run fortnightly, alternating between infants one week and primary students the next. Through these sessions, students engage in meaningful activities that deepen their understanding, appreciation, and respect for Aboriginal culture.
Our Kinnections delivers these programs with a strong commitment to high-quality, inclusive, and culturally appropriate practices. Guided by Aboriginal protocols, they ensure the authenticity and integrity of Aboriginal people and culture are maintained. At the heart of their work are connection, identity, and empowerment, aiming to inspire and strengthen our Mob.
We are grateful to Our Kinnections for partnering with us to enrich our school community and support the cultural growth and pride of all our students.
Creative and performing arts
At Lochinvar Public School, our Creative and Performing Arts program nurtures students’ creativity, confidence, and collaboration through engaging lessons in music, dance, drama, and visual arts. Our students proudly participate in the Hunter Dance Festival, where they prepare and perform choreographed routines on a professional stage, showcasing their talent and hard work. We also join local schools at the Rutherford Learning Community’s Choral Fest, providing students with valuable experience in choral performance and community connection. These opportunities, along with our broad arts curriculum, help students develop important skills while fostering a lifelong passion for the arts.
STEM
Lochinvar Public School is dedicated to nurturing the talents and capacities of all students, including those identified as high potential and gifted, in alignment with the NSW Department of Education’s High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) policy. Our comprehensive STEM program, encompassing robotics, coding, and digital technologies, offers enriched and differentiated learning pathways designed to challenge and inspire students with advanced capabilities and interests in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
Through hands-on projects, collaborative problem-solving, and inquiry-based learning, students develop critical thinking, creativity, and technical skills essential for the 21st century. These programs provide opportunities for high potential and gifted learners to extend their knowledge, explore complex concepts, and engage in innovative practices that foster intellectual growth and a passion for STEM disciplines.
At Lochinvar Public School, we are committed to delivering evidence-based, inclusive STEM initiatives that support talent development and prepare students to excel academically and contribute meaningfully as future innovators and leaders.
Imaginaturalists
At Lochinvar Public School, our Imaginaturalists program encourages students to engage with science and nature through creativity and hands-on learning. This program aligns with our commitment to the High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) policy by providing enriched, differentiated learning experiences that nurture students’ unique talents and passions in scientific thinking and artistic expression.
Through imaginative art and exploration activities, students deepen their understanding of the natural world while developing critical thinking, confidence, and a love of learning. Imaginaturalists supports the development of intellectual and creative abilities, meeting the diverse needs of gifted and high potential learners and fostering their growth in a supportive and challenging environment.
At Lochinvar Public School, we strive to create opportunities for every student to thrive, igniting curiosity and a lifelong passion for discovery through innovative programs like Imaginaturalists.
Public Speaking and Spelling Bee
At Lochinvar Public School, we are committed to nurturing effective communication and language skills through our comprehensive Public Speaking program and the annual Spelling Bee competition.
Our Public Speaking program is designed to help students develop confidence, clarity, and persuasive communication skills. Through guided lessons and regular practice, students learn how to construct speeches, organise their thoughts, and present with poise in front of an audience. This program encourages critical thinking, creativity, and active listening, preparing students to express their ideas confidently in a variety of settings. Opportunities to participate in internal and external speaking events allow students to refine their skills and gain valuable experience.
Complementing this, our annual Spelling Bee competition provides an engaging and academically enriching challenge that promotes mastery of spelling, vocabulary, and language patterns. Students participate in progressive rounds of spelling challenges, which help improve their attention to detail, memory, and concentration. The competition fosters a supportive yet competitive environment that encourages resilience, perseverance, and a love of words. It also helps build self-esteem as students advance through the stages, representing their classes and the school.
Together, these programs play an integral role in cultivating essential literacy and communication abilities, enabling Lochinvar Public School students to become articulate, confident, and lifelong learners.
